What Is a Body Piercing?

Body piercing involves making a hole in the body using a needle and then inserting jewelry into the piercing. Common areas for body piercings are the ears, nose, and belly button. Oral piercings can be done on the lip, cheek, and tongue.

Once a piercing has healed, individuals may decide to enlarge the hole to accommodate specific types of jewelry such as plugs and tunnels. It is advisable to stretch the piercing gradually in small steps to minimize the risk of causing damage or scarring.

What Should I know About It?

Prior to getting a piercing, it is advisable to conduct thorough research. If you are below 18 years old, certain establishments may require parental consent for piercings, with some even necessitating the presence of a parent during the procedure. In select states, minors are prohibited from undergoing piercings.

Before proceeding with a body piercing, ensure that you have received all necessary immunizations, particularly hepatitis B and tetanus shots. Individuals with medical conditions such as heart disease, allergies, diabetes, a compromised immune system, or bleeding disorders should consult their physician before getting pierced. For those considering tongue or mouth piercings, it is essential to confirm the health of your teeth and gums.

If you are prone to keloids (excessive scar tissue growth), it is advisable to refrain from getting body piercings. While body piercings are widely accepted, certain types of piercings may have a negative impact on your job prospects or career advancement.
